As a member of a Francophone cultural community here in Toronto for the past 21 years, I can wholeheartedly relate to the insights shared in this report. My husband, family, and I have dedicated ourselves to supporting non-profit organizations assisting new immigrants in settling into life in Canada. Through countless volunteer-led initiatives — from organizing children’s activities like Christmas parties, summer BBQs, and soccer games, to leading adult programs centered on traditional dance, music, and cultural storytelling during Black History Month in GTA schools — we’ve seen firsthand the impact of grassroots engagement.
However, I also recognize the very real challenges echoed by survey participants. The lack of funding and resources often led to burnout, and the absence of financial training and tools made it difficult for well-meaning volunteers to maintain accurate books, a key requirement for securing sustainable funding.
The work that Boîte Interculturelle is doing to bring these conversations to light is deeply commendable. I hope this survey is more than a reflection of lived experiences, and the beginning of real, actionable solutions for organizations like ours that have the heart but need the structure and support to thrive.
